THE MOSQUES OF MACEDONIA
Jahja Pasha's mosque, 1503/04
The construction of the mosque was enabled by Jahja Pasha who married Hatidje Hatun, Sultan Bajazit's II daughter (1481-1512) and became his son in law. Besides the mosque he constructed public charity kitchen and school. The mosque is among the most representative buildings from the beginning of the XVI century. Due to many damages in the past and several renewals, the building lost partly the authenticity. Firstly Jahja Pasha mosque had a dome as well as five smaller domes over the porch and so it belongs to the type of mosques with more rooms and domes with sideways rooms.

The wide porch is made from white marble as well as the portal which is mentioned as unique in the wider region. It is a specific creation done in stalactite decoration, followed by rosettes and written down calligraphic inscriptions. The wooden front doors are made of massive walnut tree in "kündekârî" technique, with dominant geometrical elements with twined ivory.

In the upper part of the doors there are written down records in celi-nesh script.

On right: "Pray on time"

On Left: "Don't wait the death with regret"

The walls of the mosque are the most massive among the Ottoman buildings with 2,70m thickness. Evliya Çelebi for the mosque wrote down: " It has high dome and high minaret which is very similar to the minaret of Aja Sofija in Istanbul." The minaret is the highest among the Skopje religious buildings (45,50 without the final conic part (kulah). Besides the specific architectural elements, the building is characteristic for its marvelous decorative plastic of marble and stone in the interior of the building.
