Sveti Nikola of Vevcani
The village of Vevcani is located at the foot of the Jablanica Mountain, 14 kilometres away from the Ohrid Lake and the town of Struga. The Sveti Nikola church (St Nicolas) is built in XIX Century, fresco-painted from Dico Zograf and his son Avram, is situated on the top of the hill of Vevcani, like a sign of a spiritual life of the former generations.

The Sveti Nikola Church is a cathedral church, and one nave basilica with a dome, and balcony. The renovation of this church is related with the renovation of another church in the town of Struga. Namely in 1830 the parochy in Stuga attempted to renew its ruined church, but the Vizier in
Skadarlija who administered Ohrid and Struga refuse to give his consent for such Endeavor . Finally Ohrid's archbishop Kalinik (1800-1842) using his social network and bribing officials managed to get a secret permission (iljam) from Ohrid’s chief judge. But this document was illegal, it did not produce any action, because it failed to contain data related to the church, such as name, size, dimensions.

The Archbishop managed to obtain another permission using the same approach, and based on the second permission the Sultan issued decision for rebuilding and renewing the church. Thus, the vezir of Skadar, Afas Pasha issued administrative permission for construction of the church in the region of Struga and its sorroung villages: Vevcani,. Oktisi, Labunishta and Velgosti, charging a big amount of money for the same. According to the legend the people of Struga gave an enormouse amount of money to the Ohrid’s administer and the other dignities , both local and abroad. In support of this claim goes the fact that the floor of the church is plain , what at the time was not allowed by the authorities. The legend says that the basement was going seven stairs beneath the ground level, but the same was on a later stage filled and covered. The foundation was 4.5 m deep and 1.20 wide, the church is built from a hand worked stone. The dimension of the church was 18 m long and 12.5 wide.
The entrance door is made of tin/pewter, the door as well as the other openings made of stone has biblical signs inscribed. There are many stories and legends as to how the consent was obtained from Ottoman diginities, each story (more unlekly than the other) portray the popular wisdom and mirror the corruption of the sun set of the Ottoman Empire. The calculations, based on various travelogues written by prominent historical persons (such as
Branislav Nusic) indicate the construction was completed between 1862 and 1864. The Iconostasis of the church was completed by Dimitar Krstev, known as
Dico Zoograf (1819-1872) from the Mijak village of Tresonce near Debar.

This gifted Macedonian artist devoted valuable master pieces to this temple. His first icon was meant for this church, most likely completed in 1849, more precisely after completing his works in the Bigorski monastery. Dico Zograf probably completed also the throne icons in 1876, when the temple was sanctified. Otherwise much of the fresco paintings are done by Avram Dicov (1849-1923) the son of Dico Zograf, a phase that was completed somewhere in1879. This church is one of the most beautiful churches of the Macedonian revival period. A school building was constructed in the yard of this church (1866), hosting a boys school called ‘Sveti Spas’ (Holy Salvation) and girls school ‘Nadezda’ (Hope). In variouse form a school community continued to exist until after the war, during former Yugoslavia the school existed for one year and after that was destroyed. The interesting fact related to the destruction of the school is that very old graves were discovered during the dated very early in the history, build of stone. The graves were hosting the remaining of people with extremely large extremities.
Northeast from the church a bell tower was located which has been gift to the church by local dignities. On the 10 October a new church building was constructed north from the church. The building is meant for baptising, gallery of icons, library, offices and an apartment.
